About HanOpen
HanOpen turns HWP and HWPX documents into DOCX, Markdown, HTML and plain text inside your browser. This page says who builds it, why it exists, what it refuses to do and where it stops.
Why this site exists
A Korean attachment can arrive as .hwp or .hwpx when you need to read a notice, revise a draft or extract a passage. The next step depends on your task and on the software available to you. HanOpen provides a browser path for reading or creating an editable copy without installing the author’s application.
The project focuses on local file processing and an explicit account of what the output represents. It does not reproduce every original page or unlock a restricted document.

Tani develops and operates HanOpen. The tools are free to use without an account. The site delivers pages and program files, then document processing takes place in your browser. There is no server receiving documents for conversion.
The operator cannot see files you select in a tool. Site access logs and emails you choose to send are handled as described in the privacy policy. Use the contact page to report a problem or suggest a feature.
What it converts
HanOpen reads HWP 5.0 and HWPX files and writes four things: DOCX that stays editable in a word processor, Markdown for notes and for feeding text into other programs, HTML for reading and printing, and plain text when only the words matter. A viewer shows a document without converting it, and two side utilities cover neighbouring Korean file problems.
What it will not convert
Some files are refused on purpose. A distribution document is one the author saved with editing and copying restricted; password protected and DRM documents are the same kind of case. HanOpen detects all three, stops, and does not remove the protection. If you need such a file in another format, ask the person who sent it for a copy saved without the restriction.
HWP 3.x files from the Hangul 97 era are out of scope. OLE objects and charts get a placeholder rather than being redrawn, tracked changes and vertical writing are not carried across, and an equation is kept as its original script text rather than rebuilt.
The limit worth knowing about
HanOpen does not reproduce the page layout of the original. Where a line wraps, where a page breaks and where a floating box sits depend on the fonts installed and the program doing the drawing, so a converted document beside its source will look different. What it keeps is content and structure: paragraphs and character styles, tables including merged cells, footnotes, images, numbering and lists.
Because that promise has edges, every conversion ends with a conversion summary counting what the parser found against what the writer wrote. A simplified table or a placeholder object is visible before you pass the file on.

HWP and HWPX are trademarks of Hancom Inc. HanOpen is an independent project and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or otherwise connected to Hancom Inc. The site contains no Hancom software; it reads the file format with a parser written for this project, using the specification Hancom published.
Measured support
Tani develops the parsers and output paths against the published file-format documentation, checks individual structures with synthetic inputs, and compares recorded sample documents and generated output. The public examples use fictional content made for this site; they give you small files whose intended words, names or timecodes can be inspected.
The recorded September 2026 Word 16 checks and later generated-file checks have different scopes. A file that was generated successfully has not necessarily been visually checked in your editor. We keep those observations separate from application compatibility and compare warnings and output structure before changing support descriptions.
How a reported problem becomes a correction
A useful report identifies the tool, browser, input type, displayed error and the part that differs from the original. Tani first tries to reproduce that behavior with non-sensitive material. A change is checked against a defined input and the existing regression checks before release; feature descriptions are revised when the evidence changes.
Do not email a sensitive original to start a report. An error description or redacted example is enough for the first step. The contact page explains what to include and how inquiry material is handled.
Inspect an example and its limits
You can run the examples without supplying a personal document. Their explanations describe the input, expected output and parts that need review. The verification page separates these repeatable examples from broader corpus and application checks.
