How to open an HWP file
Start with the result you need: readable text, a page preview, or an editable document. These are different tasks, and one successful preview does not prove that every part of a document survived.
Choose a reading or editing path
For a letter, notice or short instruction sheet, start with the HWP viewer. Its reading view displays document content as HTML on the same page. You can inspect paragraphs, tables and supported pictures without first saving another document. The text flows to fit the reading area, so original page boundaries are not the reference here.
If you need to change wording or fill in a form, convert to DOCX instead. Keep the original file beside the converted copy. For a translation or quotation, HTML, Markdown or plain text may be a more useful intermediate result than an editable page layout.
Open the file in HanOpen
Save the attachment to a folder you can find again. Open the viewer, choose the file, and select the button to open the selected documents. HWP and HWPX files use the same reading interface. Several files can be opened together; use the document selector to switch between successful results.
Read the conversion summary below the document. It separates detected elements from elements recorded in the reading view and lists warnings. If one file fails, check its own error rather than assuming that the whole selection failed. A document that opens successfully can still contain unsupported objects.
Use page preview when position matters
Page preview is a separate action. Selecting it downloads the rendering engine, then displays one page at a time. The transfer is roughly 3 MB when compressed; the progress display counts the actual uncompressed bytes received. Next and previous controls move through the pages, and the displayed page can be saved as a PNG image.
This mode helps inspect where a heading, table or picture appears. The installed fonts still affect the result. Documents of 5 MB or more are excluded from page preview, and an overly complex or slow document can be stopped. The reading view remains the fallback.
Windows: check the actual document, then edit
Browser flows have been checked with Chromium, Firefox and WebKit engines on Windows. For a document you intend to edit, download its DOCX result and open that result in your intended application. Check the first paragraph, a merged table, any notes, and the final paragraph before continuing your work.
Our recorded Word 16 check on 7 September 2026 opened 41 converted test documents without a repair prompt. That is evidence for those files and that application version. It does not establish that every HWP document, every Word release, or every layout will behave identically on your computer.
Mac, Linux, Android and iPhone: what to expect
The file-selection workflow is the same idea on other systems: obtain the original attachment, choose it from the browser, and wait for the document result. If an email app shows only an attachment preview, save the actual file before trying the viewer. A screenshot of a page is not an HWP input file.
Verified browser flows cover Chromium, Firefox and WebKit engines on Windows. This does not establish compatibility on actual macOS, Linux, Android or iPhone devices. Check document content and downloaded output on the device you intend to use. For an urgent document, have the sender provide a readable reference copy and retain access to another device.
When the file will not open
An extension is only a filename label. Renaming an HWP file to HWPX, DOCX or ZIP does not convert its internal content. HanOpen inspects the bytes and reports the detected format; when the extension and content disagree, use that notice to identify the mismatch.
Password-protected documents, distribution-only documents and DRM-protected documents are blocked by this version. HWP 3.x files are also outside the supported parser range. Ask the author for an unprotected HWP 5.0 or HWPX source when appropriate. Repeating the same conversion or changing the filename does not remove these restrictions.
Check privacy without confusing downloads with uploads
Document parsing and output generation run in your browser. Loading the site, its scripts and the optional rendering engine still creates network traffic. Google Analytics also sends measurement requests as described in the privacy policy, including cookieless signals when analytics storage is denied. These are separate from uploading the selected document.
To inspect the behavior, open the browser network panel before selecting a file. Keep it open while the reading result appears and while you request page preview. Look at request methods and payloads, not just whether the request list changed. The selected file contents should not appear as an upload request.
What we checked, and what remains yours to check
On 8 September 2026, automated checks generated reading HTML and the first and last preview pages for 41 test documents. The set includes HWP 5.0 and HWPX files; previewed documents ranged up to 50 pages. Those checks establish successful output generation, not visual identity with the author’s original application.
For a file you will submit or share, review the recipient names, numbers, table cells, note text and last page yourself. Compare against a trusted reference when appearance matters. Retain the original until the edited or exported copy has been accepted.
