What is preserved

The reading view uses the HTML conversion path and your device’s fonts, so it can change line wraps and omit page headers and footers. Page preview is a separate rendering path, not a promise of exact reproduction. PNG saves one rendered page as an image; it does not create an editable document or a searchable text export.

About the formats

Reflow means arranging extracted content for reading without preserving every original page coordinate. A narrow screen may wrap the same paragraph differently from a wide screen, and complex tables can require horizontal movement within the document. The optional preview renders a page as SVG using a WebAssembly engine downloaded after you request it. Those two views answer different questions: the reading view helps you examine the available content, while page preview helps you inspect its arrangement. Neither view edits the HWP or HWPX source. For text you plan to revise, use a conversion format and review that output separately instead of treating a screenshot as editable material.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Page preview unavailable for a large file?: The preview path rejects files at or above 5 MiB and documents containing 5,000 or more counted images, tables, text boxes, OLE objects and charts. These limits protect the page-rendering workflow; they do not mean the same document necessarily fails in the reflowed reading view.
What happens if preview loading takes too long?: A preview operation has a 30-second limit. On timeout its worker stops and the page reports the failure rather than continuing indefinitely. You can close the preview and return to the reading workflow. Repeated attempts on the same complex file may encounter the same limit.
Can I download all preview pages as one document?: The save control exports the displayed page as PNG. It does not assemble a PDF or export the original HWP with changes. Use the page controls to inspect another page before saving that page separately; for an editable result, choose one of the conversion tools.
Does a different line break indicate missing text?: A line break can move because the reading view has a different available width or font metrics. Look for the complete sentence and its neighbouring paragraphs rather than comparing line endings alone. A missing table, picture or unsupported element requires checking the result summary as well.
Will the viewer unlock a distribution document?: Both reading and preview follow the same protection policy: password-protected documents, distribution documents, DRM and encrypted HWPX bodies are rejected. The page renderer is not exposed as a way around that restriction. Ask the document owner for a permitted reading copy when access is needed.
Can I verify that the attachment stays local?: Open browser developer tools and inspect network requests while loading a document. Site assets and the optional preview engine can be downloaded, but the file-processing path does not upload your attachment. The reading frame disables external document links. Opening an external address yourself or later sharing a saved PNG is a separate action from viewing it here.

Start with the content you need

Identify the question you want the attachment to answer before switching views. In a constructed notice example, you need an application deadline, the submission address and an attachment list. Read those passages in the reflowed view and compare the labels around them. If the address appears in a picture rather than paragraph text, inspect that picture instead of assuming a text search is complete. A quick glance at the first page is not a check of the final section or notes, especially when several similarly named attachments are open.

Use page preview deliberately

The separate renderer costs a download and additional processing, which is why simply visiting this tool does not start it. Loading progress distinguishes downloading from opening and rendering work. After a preview appears, inspect the current page number before moving forward or saving a PNG. In a constructed report example, the caption and chart may be on adjacent pages: examine both rather than saving the first plausible image. Device fonts and renderer support can still differ from the application that created the document, so visible page placement is useful evidence rather than a universal compatibility guarantee.

Choose the right form of evidence

A PNG records the appearance of a single preview page. It can help you point to a table or explain where something appeared, but the image does not retain selectable paragraphs, live table cells or a source-document signature. If a colleague needs to edit the wording, send an appropriate converted document through your own sharing workflow after checking it. If an institution requires the original attachment, retain that attachment. Changing a filename or taking a screenshot does not change the evidentiary role of the underlying material.

Handle a failed view without guessing

Check the displayed error and the actual attachment before retrying. A preview size limit, a timeout and an invalid document are different situations. An HTML error page saved with an HWP suffix is not an HWP document, while a protected attachment may be perfectly intact but deliberately unsupported. When one file in a group fails, use the document selector to inspect the successful entries and keep track of which source each result belongs to. A working reading view does not imply that the optional renderer can open every page within its resource limits.

For a reusable reading file, create HTML with the conversion tool. For searchable notes, choose TXT or Markdown and check what extraction leaves out. Keep the source when you need authoritative pagination, signatures or an original document record; this viewer helps inspect a copy and does not establish document authenticity.
