Convert HWP to DOCX in your browser

Open an HWP 5.0 document as an editable DOCX without installing Hancom software: HanOpen reads the binary document and writes Word content in your browser, with no file upload. For an XML-based HWPX source, use the dedicated HWPX to DOCX page.

Your file never leaves this device.

Options

Word looks up a font by name for every run of text. Hangul characters survive either choice; this only decides which name Word is told to use.

Conversion summary

After a conversion this card lists what was detected and what was written to the output.

Layout, line breaks and font positions are not preserved.

How to use it

  1. Select the .hwp files you need to edit and choose a font mapping that suits the device where the DOCX will be opened.
  2. Start conversion and wait for the file-by-file results; the document parser and DOCX writer run in background workers on this device.
  3. Download the Word documents, read each conversion summary, and check important tables, notes and pictures against the original before editing further.

What is preserved

DOCX output uses editable table cells and Word footnote and endnote parts. Floating pictures and text boxes can change placement, equations remain source text, and unsupported objects produce warnings or placeholders. The counts describe detected and emitted elements, not a visual similarity score.

About the formats

HWP 5.0 stores document information and body records inside a binary Compound File container. DOCX stores Office Open XML parts in a ZIP package. Renaming an HWP file to .docx cannot perform that structural conversion. HanOpen reads paragraphs, character settings, table cells, image references and notes into a document model, then constructs DOCX parts from that model. The output is intended for editing the represented content rather than preserving a photographed page. HWP 3.x files, password protection, certificate-based DRM and distribution protection are outside this converter’s accepted input scope.

Frequently asked questions

Is Hancom Office required on this computer?
The HWP parser runs as part of this website, so the conversion itself does not depend on a locally installed Hancom application. You will need an application capable of opening DOCX to edit the downloaded result. Font availability on that destination device still affects its appearance.
What has actually been checked in Word?
In the September 7, 2026 corpus check, all 31 tested HWP-derived DOCX files opened in Word 16 without a repair operation. Their table counts matched and the measured text coverage was at least 99%. Those observations apply to that corpus and Word setup; they do not establish pixel-identical layout or compatibility with every document editor.
Can protected distribution documents be converted?
Distribution protection, passwords and certificate-based DRM are detected and reported. HanOpen does not remove those protections or ask for a password. Request an editable original or an unprotected copy from the document’s author when that is appropriate for your work.
Will tables remain editable?
Represented tables are written as Word tables, including horizontal and vertical cell merges. Unusual cell boundaries may require grid reconstruction, which appears in the warnings. Check narrow columns, nested tables and long content after opening the result because editable structure and identical page layout are different requirements.
What happens to equations and embedded objects?
Equation scripts are kept as text rather than converted to editable Word equations. OLE objects and charts use placeholders where their contents cannot be represented. Supported embedded raster images are included, while WMF and EMF use image placeholders. A warning is a prompt to inspect that part of the source, not a statement that the entire conversion failed.
Can several HWP files be converted together?
The page accepts multiple HWP files and reports success or failure for each. Multiple successful DOCX outputs can be downloaded in a ZIP. The browser applies file-size limits, and documents with very many objects can require more work than their byte size suggests.

Read the summary before editing

The summary separates what the parser found from what the DOCX writer emitted. Start with warnings for missing pictures, linked images, text boxes, table reconstruction and unsupported object types. A matching count means the corresponding elements were accounted for; it does not prove that every element has the same position, line breaks or visual emphasis. If a contract number or total sits inside a complex table, compare that region directly with the source.

Choose fonts deliberately

The font options include Malgun Gothic, Batang, Noto and retaining the original font names. Keeping names does not embed the original font files or install them on the recipient’s computer. A destination editor may substitute an unavailable font, changing line length and page breaks. Pick a mapping, inspect a representative paragraph and table, then use the same choice for documents that need a consistent appearance.

Review page-sensitive content

Floating images are placed inline at their document anchor, and text boxes are represented with simplified containers. Headers, footers and numbering have partial support. A form designed around exact blank space can therefore need manual adjustment even when its text and cells are present. Check signatures, approval blocks, captions and page boundaries before using the DOCX as the final version; preserve the original for comparison.

Verify local processing

The conversion uses selected file bytes in browser workers and provides the output through a local download. To inspect this behavior, open the browser’s network panel before choosing a file and watch for file-transfer requests while converting. Loading the website and its scripts still requires network access; the local-processing claim concerns your document bytes. Separate analytics consent or ordinary site requests should not be confused with uploading the HWP.

Other options

For an editable handoff, ask the sender whether a DOCX source or an approved editable copy already exists. If you only need to read the document, the HWP viewer avoids creating an editing file. Markdown is useful for text-oriented notes, while HTML provides a self-contained reading copy. Choose the output for the next task and retain the HWP original as the reference.

Analytics preferences

Google Analytics measures page visits and document conversion counts, without filenames or document text. In the EEA, UK and Switzerland, analytics cookies require your acceptance; elsewhere they can be used before you choose. Declining switches measurement to cookieless signals. Your choice is valid for 180 days and can be changed here. Every tool works with analytics declined.
